EASTER OFFERS IN ALGHERO 2018
The Santa Setmana del Alguer Rites and traditions
The Holy Week of Alghero is a ritual that is repeated unchanged for centuries, which strongly retains the Catalan imprint.
Even today an event very much felt by the people of Alghero and that attracts every year faithful and tourists from every part of Sardinia and from the Catalan communities of Spain.
SETMANA SANTA OF ALGUER
It is a celebration of popular faith, which fills the narrow and dark alleyways of the old city
Illuminated by thousands of red torches that parade in a slow procession punctuated by prayers and songs of the faithful immersed in a sacredness of great emotional impact.
Among the most significant events is the Processò dels Misteris (The Procession of the Mysteries).
The six statues representing the Passion of Christ are carried on the shoulder along the whole path, of particular value is the Christ of Alicante.
Delivered in the city following the shipwreck of the Santa Maria di Montenero sailing ship in 1606, departed from Alicante and headed to Genoa, the Santcristus, of Spanish origin, has become a symbol of Alghero’s historical and religious tradition.
The most awaited moment of the rites is certainly that of Desclavament, the descent from the Good Friday Cross.
The simulacrum of Christ is deposited in the golden coffin renamed “bressol” (cradle) and crosses the historical center followed in a procession by the Jermans Blancs, the Spanish brotherhoods of the hooded, the faithful in prayer on a long dark path lit only by red torches.
It is the celebration of the funeral of Christ, and to represent the participation of all peoples along the way the choirs of many Sardinian countries are located.
The faithful, visitors arrive in Alghero to be gladly fascinated by these deep traditions that the people have jealously handed down in the passage of time in preserving the memory, culture, traditions still so alive in this corner of Catalan Sardinia.
